The Crashing Wave
In honor of my dad, Thomas P. Schaefer (Capt. USCG Ret.), who passed away in August 2018. As dad lay in his hospital bed battling a brain tumor, I asked him if he would like to paint a picture with me. He was doubtful at first having never been an artist, but I explained that what I really needed was for him to provide the vision and that I would do the rest. He described the scene as he imagined it and I prepared a sketch for him. The stormy sky and the wave crashing on the rocky beach represent his cancer and his life nearing an end. However, in the upper right hand corner there is a bit of blue sky poking through the clouds that represents the hope that my dad lived by. I worked until very late that night and was able to finish the painting the next morning and present it to him. The painting remained in his room with him through his final days.
I am pleased to announce that Cheap Joe’s Art Supply has selected my dad’s painting to be featured in their 2019 catalog.
