The Brave

I painted this watercolor as a wedding gift for my nephew, Daniel Jacquier, and his wife, Hannah. Dan and Hannah are graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy and “Brave” is a boat he sailed while at the academy.

I’ve always loved the graceful lines of sailboats and the natural way they utilize wind to propel them. While sketching the boat I also became more intimately acquainted with the complexity of the many lines and fittings necessary for the functioning of the boat! Although it was challenging to draw and paint, it deepened my appreciation of how all the many pieces (wind, water, hull, sail and sailors) fit together in such a beautiful way.
