The Jacobite

My brother returned from a trip to Scotland with many interesting photographs and stories. I was particularly taken with a photo of this fellow in traditional garb lighting a pipe and knew I had to paint it.
This is a “line and wash” – the original sketch is done using waterproof black ink and then watercolor was added on top of it. I love the look of line and wash but had never tried it with a realistic figure painting before. At least to my eye, it gives a “classic” look which works well with the subject.
