Before My Morning Coffee

This painting was a delightful experiment with textures and colors. Dry brush on rough paper, splattering paint with a toothbrush and scratching with a knife combined with the wonderful interplay of watercolor pigments on paper. Note that the back of the crab is a “lost edge”… there is no line separating the outline of the crab from the sand. This is more visually interesting to our brains which recognize the crab shape, fills in the missing information and creates the impression that the crab has just emerged from the sand.

I am grateful that this painting was selected by juror Lana Privitera for the Watercolor Society of North Carolina 2024 Annual Exhibition. The exhibition was held at The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards in High Point North Carolina from September to October 2024.
