Boarding the Governor’s Island Ferry
June 5, 2024
When I was in high school, my dad was stationed at Governor’s Island in New York City harbor. Governor’s Island was a Coast Guard base and a unique place to live. Just off the tip of Manhattan and across from the Statue of Liberty, one of the daily rituals was riding the ferry to and from Manhattan (since that was the only way to leave the island). The ferry left very punctually on a schedule and I remember many times when I would be running from the Staten Island ferry terminal on my way home from high school trying to catch the ferry before it departed. I visited the island again recently and was inspired to capture the feeling of boarding the ferry again for the short trip across the harbor.
